Special Education Services

June 30, 2021

Dear Families –

As I approach my retirement, it is bittersweet to be writing my last letter to Salem Families. I leave with so many fond, funny, heartwarming and joyful memories of “your children”/”my kids”.  I’m as equally proud of the hard work they put in to achieve their many successes as I am of our hard work as a collaborative team of caring adults who helped these students reach their goals.  Together, we accomplished great things and I will forever be grateful for your partnership.

The Pupil Personnel Department will have a new name and slightly different role next year. It will be known as the Department of Special Education. The primary focus of the Special Education Department will be on “all things special education”, i.e., working with school teams and students “from referral to the implementation of the IEP”.  All contact information (phone, emails, location) will remain the same.  Services such as health and nursing, counseling, family outreach, transportation, attendance and homeless/housing support will now fall under the umbrella of a newly the created department of Student and Family Supports. You will soon be able to access their contact information and department description and services on Salem’s new website. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact the Special Ed Department with any questions and concerns. If our staff are not able to assist you, they can direct you to someone who can.

Thank you all for 31 great years in Salem!  Linda Farinelli will be assuming the role of Director of Special Education on July 1st.  Linda and I have worked closely for several years, and know the department is now in her capable hands and will thrive under her competent leadership.  It’s been a sincere honor to serve you in my many different roles.  I wish you and your children every success and much happiness in the years to come.

If you are in need of more information please call 978-740-1249, or contact a PPS staff member, so that we may direct your question or concern to the most appropriate person. The PPS office, located in Ste. 115 of the Collins Middle School, will be open and staffed from 8:00am-4:00pm M-F.

Thank you,

Deborah Connerty
