Language Based Learning Disability

The Language-based Programs serve students with language processing and production deficits and learning challenges that impact overall functioning. The program provides both sub-separate and co-taught options. The programs are designed to meet the needs of those students, whose language processing deficits are impeding their academic achievement, inhibiting their social development and generally limiting their ability to grow to their full potential. These students may have difficulty with reading, writing, organization, math, and may be easily distracted or have difficulty following directions. Others experience difficulties in oral expression. The program's goal is to provide each student an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment, and have access to the full range of programs and services available to their non-disabled peers. Students are placed into this special education program only when the severity of their disability is such that education in the general education classes even with the use of supplementary aides and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily.

Program Components:
  • Integrated language-based instruction across the curriculum, including expressive language arts and mathematics delivered in small groups
  • Intensive support & professional development from Landmark School Outreach Program
  • Development of academic skills in alignment with the Common Core Curriculum
  • Daily individual and/or group specialized reading intervention
  • Social sills instruction to improve interaction with peers, as needed
  • Speech and language instruction or consultation, may include social language skills
  • Supported inclusion opportunities as appropriate to the student
  • Targeted progress monitoring using formal and informal measures
  • Direct instruction of metacognitive strategies to increase independence and self-awareness as a learner.
