This past week has brought our community a multitude of challenges that we have never encountered before. Along with these challenges in the Salem community is a strong spirit of working together to make the well being of our students, employees, and community our top priority.

Although this is a time of uncertainty, I have found this “can and will do spirit” most rewarding and encouraging as we deal with this extended school closure. In a matter of one week we have accomplished so much that will allow our children and families to cope with this present situation.

Thank you to the Food Service workers and Bus Drivers for making sure our students receive two nutritious meals each day as we distribute breakfast and lunch options at schools and community drop off locations throughout the city. Today over 700 meals were delivered to our children and this number increases every day. You are the best!

Thank you to our custodial staff, facilities and buildings and grounds staff for not only performing the critical coverage for cleaning and disinfecting our buildings everyday but to support our staff in entering the schools  for food preparation, retrieval of student digital devices, and allowing staff to enter schools to gather educational materials to prepare for the new remote learning environment so critical to our students and families. You are truly on the front line in so many ways. You are appreciated and valued.

Thank you to our district leaders and principals who have developed quality academic content and enrichment lessons to students from Grades PreK-12 to begin our remote learning platform which launched on Wednesday to great reviews. You are amazing!

Thank you to our teachers and support staff who are individually reaching out to all families to offer assistance and guidance as we navigate this new form of learning, for developing plans for their students to connect with classmates through new technologies as we all work together. You are superlative!

Thank you to our parents for stepping in and performing many new tasks as you take a primary role in keeping our children engaged in learning, following routines, and reassuring them that we will get through this uncertain time together. You are our heroes!

And finally, to our wonderful resilient students, who are our inspiration for all we do.   Please know we are all working together to make your days positive, productive and rewarding. You are our greatest joy!

I look forward to updating you in the coming weeks as we bring our collective resources together to stay connected and support our children.  As always and now more than ever with sincere appreciation for your collaboration and partnership.
