Schools will be open on March 3rd during the presidential primary elections. We have worked with the Salem Police Department to ensure that all students and staff will be kept safe, and to separate voters from the school population as much as possible.

On March 3rd, all schools will have increased signage and will also have police officers assigned to assist specifically with traffic at the start and end of the school day. There will also be an increased police presence inside of the buildings to ensure that voters are not able to access areas of the schools not used for voting.

Here is a list of the specific protocols we are taking at each affected school:

Bentley Academy Innovation School: Voting takes place in the gym; therefore, physical education classes will be moved for the day. There will be an officer assigned outside of the gym to ensure that no access to the school is possible.

Bates Elementary School: Voting takes place in the gym, so classes will be relocated for the day. Voters will be using the main entrance. The stairs to the downstairs and upstairs floors will be roped off inside of the school in order to ensure that the voters don’t enter those areas. Additional police officers will also be in the lobby area to restrict access. The basketball court area will be used for parking, and so we will not be using the playground as an extra precaution.

Salem High School: Voting takes place in the auditorium. Parking for voters will be on the upper level outside of the main entrance, and the accessible parking spots will be blocked for use of voters. Please avoid parking in those areas on election day. Voters will be able to access the auditorium through the main lobby and through the outside auditorium door, weather permitting. There will be an officer and signage inside of the lobby to ensure that voters are directed into the auditorium.

Saltonstall: Voting takes place in the auditorium. Parking spots will be designated on both sides of the street in front of the school; however, the handicapped parking spots should be kept available for voters as much as possible. Officers will be assigned to allow safe access to bathrooms inside of the school for poll workers.

Witchcraft Heights Elementary School: Voting takes place in the gymnasium. Therefore, the small parking lot directly in front of the school will have additional spots marked off for handicapped parking. Please avoid parking in the small lot on election day. In addition, voters will be directed to park along Burkinshaw Way. All students should enter through the main entrance, and before school activities will be relocated away from the gym. Finally, we will not use the gym or the music room on election day, so those classes will be relocated, as well.

Our top priority is the safety of our students and staff, and we believe the protocol we are putting in place will keep everyone as safe as possible. If you have questions, please contact your building principal.
