Statement on the trial of Derek Chauvin

Yesterday, the jury in the Derek Chauvin trial delivered a guilty verdict in the murder case of George Floyd. We are filled with a range of emotions as we process not only this verdict but all other acts of violence against members of marginalized communities in our country that have occurred and continue to take place.

We hope this verdict as a statement of accountability will begin to bring healing and address the many factors that we know adversely affect families of color. While accountability was achieved in this case, the racial trauma and repeated exposure to violence and inequalities are still an on-going concern.

And so today, we affirm the following:

* We stand united with our students of color and allies in the fight against injustice, racism and discrimination.
* It is our responsibility as a school community to uplift our core values of equity and access, celebration of difference, collaboration, and fostering a culture of learning and innovation, all through a lens of equity.
* We are not powerless to change; we are committed to moving beyond good intentions to measurable and impactful results.
* Racial justice initiatives are for the common good of all children.
* We will continue to engage stakeholders in conversations, even when it is uncomfortable. All SPS students benefit from an anti-racism education.
* We commit to turning the mirror inward and advancing an anti-racist and equity-based learning community.

Our work in the Salem Public Schools is far from over.  We pledge to continue our equity and anti-racist efforts until every student, staff, and family experience success in our schools.  We thank you for being partners and committing to do this important work together.
